The Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto closed early today, marking the passing of Thomas Bata, 93, who apprenticed with his father who founded the Bata shoe company in Czechoslovakia in 1894. The company grew into a world-wide enterprise, but after the Second World War, Thomas Bata had to build the company up again. He did so from Canada. Today the headquarters of the company is in Switzerland, while the North American base is in Toronto. The company retails shoes in developed countries and manufactures shoes in the third world, a modern change in doing business.

You have to love shoes to create a shoe museum. But that is what Bata and his wife Sonja did in 1995. The museum features 4,000 years of footwear from all over the world, footwear for different climates, footwear from the rich, footwear from celebrities.

The museum is located at 327 Bloor St. West, in downtown Toronto. Directions on how to get to the museum are offered here. For hours and admission information, click here.

Bata has quite a history. The first  Thomas Bata, the founder of the company, built a modern empire, making shoes by mass manufacture, and providing good wages for employees who worked for a company with a mission. This link gives you some idea of the seriousness Bata viewed the shoe business. With that serious vision, the word Bata became, in some parts of the world, synonymous with the word shoe.
