Limit the number of MPs

Posted on: April 1, 2010

Thirty more seats have been proposed for the House of Commons.

While the U.S. House of Representatives is by law restricted to 435 seats, the Canadian House of Commons just keeps growing and growing. I remember when it was 265 seats. It now has 308. Legislation just introduced would bloat our Commons from 308 MPs to 338.

If the United States can govern 300 million with 435 seats why do we need 338 to govern a tenth that number?

Because provinces fight each other for territory. They are not going to give up seats as the country grows and as people move west. The federal government is powerless to give less. All it can do is give more.

We need to start thinking about legislation to fix the number of seats to a maximum. Perhaps 265.
